Kosciusko got off to a fast start in Region 4-4A with 3-0 victories over Greenwood and Louisville.
Scores were 25-8, 25-11, 25-9 against Greenwood and 25-20, 25-22, 25-9 against Louisville.
“Coming off COVID, I thought they responded well. They were in tune with everything we are doing,” said Cory Guyton, who is filling in as Kosciusko coach while Nikki Stephenson is on maternity leave. “All I'm doing is guiding them. Coach Nikki laid out the game plan. She laid the foundation. They are following her lead. The kids deserve all the credit.”
Bracie Jamison and Lizzie Kate Jones, the Lady Whippets' only seniors, were Players of the Game against Greenwood.
“They took control of the game and the rest of the team followed, especially with Coach Nikki's absence. They stepped up and became big leaders,” Guyton said.
The Louisville match was close in the first two sets before Kosciusko easily won the final set.
“They kept their composure,” Guyton said.
Maggie Steed and Savannah Fulgham were Players of the Game.
“After we had a slow start, both of them gave us a spark. We were kind of in a slump for a little bit,” said Guyton. “They came in with some crucial points. Both served well and got us some easy points to give us the momentum to get the victory.”
The Lady Whippets continued region play Tuesday with a home match against Yazoo City on Senior Night. Kosciusko, Yazoo City, Greenwood and Louisville are the four teams in the region. The top two will qualify for the MHSAA playoffs.
