The Trojans kicked off practice on Monday with a pair of “high-energy” practices.
“I thought the energy was great and the kids were very receptive,” Central Holmes Coach Mitch Womack said. “We were running at a fast pace and the kids responded well. The kids retained a lot from the summer and last fall and that was encouraging.”
Womack said the Trojans will do two-a-day practices for the remainder of this week and then Monday through Wednesday of next week while Thursday and Friday will be afternoon practices.
Womack said the emphasis this week will be on special teams and offense.
“We are tuning in a bunch of kids on offense with a bunch of new packages and personnel,” Womack said. “We are working a lot of players, trying to build some depth. We are trying to pinpoint some things and get some of the finer points of the game. I thought the young kids looked good and the veterans looked like veterans today which was encouraging.”
Womack did say that the heat was tough on Monday, causing him to call the second practice short.
“My goal is to get 100 percent of our run game installed and have about 50-60 percent of our pass game in,” Womack said. “If we have to pass a lot in our league, we are going to be in trouble. We are doing some RPOs and pre-snap read stuff and the kids are excited about it. We are trying to go at a fast face. We are going to get to the line and if we get a hot read, we will go with it.”
The Trojans will not play in a jamboree or preseason scrimmage this season and will kick off the regular season on Aug. 20 against Clinton Christian.
