The Central Holmes Trojans completed their first week of preseason practice this past week.
Coach Mitch Womack said he was pleased with what he saw.
“I thought it went well. We got a lot accomplished and the kids were really attentive and are getting better. We return 14 players and their retention from last year is a lot better,” Womack said. “We still have lots of teaching to do but I can see the confidence growing. Compared to last year, we are ahead of where we were this time last year.”
Last year, Womack was in quarantine with COVID to start the fall practices, putting the team behind to start the season.
“We were scrambling to install the offense and defense this time last year,” Womack said. “We have been fortunate so far and have installed a good bit of the offense. We will put a big emphasis on defense this week. We will go today through Wednesday and start school on Thursday and move to the afternoon.”
The Trojans will not participate in a scrimmage or jamboree and will kick off the season on Aug. 20 against Clinton Christian.
“We are still working on us at this point. We are still so young and have some kids at new positions. We will have to work on us and maybe by the middle of next week, we will introduce them to Clinton. But they have new coaches, so we really don’t know what they will be doing at all,” Womack said. “So we are just throwing a lot of different looks at our offense and defense and getting them ready for whatever they might see. We are still so young and don’t have a lot of linemen. We have moved up some ninth graders, but we aren’t going to throw caution to the win and get somebody hurt in a jamboree.”
