Winona Christian made the long trip to Bay Springs last week to play in a preseason scrimmage.
Sylva Bay hosted the scrimmage and while East Rankin and Wayne also participated along with Winona Christian.
WCS coach Ken Chandler, who is returning for a second stint with the school, said he saw some good and bad things.
“I thought it went OK,” Chandler said. “We got about 30 plays on offense and 30 on defense. We got out of there without getting anybody hurt so it was all good. I was pleased overall and thought our effort was good. We had a little success and that’s a positive things thing going into the next week as we get ready for Carroll.”
Chandler said he did see some positive things, especially from some of his senior playmakers.
“We knew about Jake Ware and he had a really good game and played really good on offense and ran the ball well,” Chandler said. “Brannon Hill played really well at quarterback and Collin Parkinson caught a few passes. We had a couple of linemen out and I thought Brayden Stanford did a really good job on the offense line. I thought Jake played really well at safety. We’ve got some things to clean up in the box.
And like all scrimmages, Chandler said there were plenty of things the Stars have to get better at.
“We didn’t come off the way we need them to on the offensive line,” Chandler said. “I thought the defensive line was kind of high and that’s usual for early in the season. Our outside linebackers weren’t coming up like they needed to.I thought the main thing, like 90 percent of the teams out there, we weren’t playing low enough and not behind our pads, those kind of things. If I was waiting it on a scale of 1-10, I would say it was a 6 or 7 for us. I was pleased for the most part.”
Chandler said this would a regular week for the Stars with no jamboree scheduled.
“We were going to play one but kind of took this scrimmage as our jamboree,” Chandler said. “Last week, we practiced like it was a game week with a walk through on Thursday. We are going to hit it pretty good this week and try to get some physicality in practices. We just want to try to stay healthy and get better.”
