WATER VALLEY — Betty Evans Gurner passed away at her home in Water Valley, on Thursday, January 29. She was 94 years old.
Mrs. Gurner was librarian at Charleston High School for 23 years, teaching from 1968 until 1991. Her husband, Bruce Gurner, also worked for the school district as the Vocational Guidance Counselor.
At her request, her collection of Charleston High School yearbooks will be donated to the Charleston Public Library.

Kosciusko, McAdams and Ethel girls basketball teams will begin MHSAA playoff action Monday with the boys teams tipping off a day later. Kosciusko and McAdams boys and girls will be at home, Ethel teams on the road.
In 4A Kosciusko girls will play Clarksdale and the boys Senatobia.
McAdams and Ethel are in 1A. McAdams girls host South Delta at 5 p.m. Monday and the boys play West Bolivar at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson Jackson Gymnasium.

Preliminary 2025 data from the ASP Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force shows dramatic increases in reports of online exploitation involving Arkansas youth.2025 Preliminary Totals (compared to 2024):
• 391 sextortion cases — up 118%
• 5,653 online enticement (pre-travel) reports — up 490%
• 11 suicide threats — up 120%

The Dumas City Council met in a special called meeting to discuss the city budget and approved Resolutions 1665 and 1666 Saturday January 31, 2026.
Resolution 1665 – Councilmember Romona Weatherford made a motion to amend the 2025 budget to match the 2025 revenue and expenses and seconded by Tironeka Brown. Motion passed unanimously.
Resolution 1666 - Kenneth Daniels made a motion made to adopt the 2026 Annual Budget and seconded by Tironeka Brown. Motion passed unanimously.

SWEETHEART SALAD
3 pkgs strawberry gelatin
2 cups boiling water
2 cups sliced strawberries, lightly sweetened
1 can crushed pineapples, drained
2 sliced bananas
1 cup sour cream
3/4 cup toasted, chopped pecans
Dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Stir in fruit and nuts. Pour 1/2 mixture in mold. Chill until almost set. Spread on sour cream. Pour remaining gelatin on sour cream and chill until set.

Present for the meeting were Mayor Price Boney, Sr. and Council Members Jared May, Romona Weatherford, Tironeka Brown, Roy Dalton, Kenneth Daniels and Linda Weatherford. Absent were Diane Fisher and Amber Madison. Attorney Brooks Gill was absent. Norma Esaw was present as recorder.
Mayor Price Boney, Sr. called the regular meeting to order. Kenneth Daniels led the Council in prayer. The Council led the Pledge of Allegiance.
