McAdams had five second place finishes — four by the boys and one girl — at the CrossRoads Relays hosted by Winona High School. Both coaches, Mitchell Myer for the boys and Alice Ivy for the girls, felt that the competition against mostly larger schools is good preparation for the 6-1A district meet April 14, also at Winona.
Myer said his team will benefit from competing at the same site. “My athletes were telling me how different the track was from Velma Jackson. They got a feeling for the track.”
The only other meet this year was at Velma Jackson.
Ivy said “I wanted to see what they could do.”
Jamarques Spivey had a strong meet for the boys with a second in the 200 in 23.93 and a fifth in the 100 (12.37). He also anchored the 400 relay team that took sixth and the fifth place 800 team.
The other seconds for the boys were Jacquese Greer in the 1600 (5:35), Kurt Mitchell in the 300 hurdles (45.72) and the 1600 relay team with a time of 3:51.28. Runners were Greer, Chris Harmon, Omari Barron-Hampton and Jamar Teague.
Greer joined the team just before the meet. “He told me he wanted to run the 1600,” Myer said.
Teague was third in the 800 (2:25) and fourth in the high jump (5-2), Mitchell took sixth in the 110 hurdles (21.17), the 800 and 3200 relay teams finished fifth and the 400 team was sixth.
Bryia Harmon had the girls second in the shot put with a throw of 31-5. “She's the one we definitely expect great things out of,” Ivey said.
Paris Fleming was third in the 1600 (7:26). Kiyah Harmon fourth in the high jump (4-6), Taliah Gadson seventh in the 200 (30.67) all four relay teams were in the top eight — fourth for the 1600, fifth for the 3200, sixth for the 800 and seventh for the 400.
