The first track meet for Kosciusko boys and girls will be the Falcon Relays Thursday at Columbus High School. There will be at least 19 schools entered.
Girls coach Eleazarus Greenleaf is counting on two veterans, senior Presley Fulgham, and junior Raven Pernell, to lead the team.
Fulgham is the two-time defending state champion in the pole vault. “She is very focused to get her third state championship,” Greenleaf said. “She trained hard during the summer.”
Pernell was third in long jump, and will also compete in the sprints.
“She is very determined, very focused,” Greenleaf said. “She said she is willing to do whatever it takes to be a sate champion this year.”
The girls finished 16th at last year's 4A state meet with 16 points, 10 by Fulghm and six by Pernell.
The boys were 21st with eight points, the result of second in the discus by Jerrell Erving, who graduated.
Team leaders will include junior Jaquavus Pace in the sprints and relays, senior Demond Reed in the 400 and 1600 relay and junior Javen Mallett in the shot put and discus.
