Kosciusko boys basketball trailed Louisville 15-7 after one quarter, then scored 75 points the rest of the way for an 82-55 victory to improve to 5-0 in Region 4-4A and 20-3 overall.
Even with a 29-point second quarter the halftime lead was only five, 36-31.
“The entire first half they did not miss. They really played out of their minds,” Kosciusko coach Marquis Bailey said of Louisville. “They were making some tough shots. I told the guys they could not sustain this. If Louisville could sustain this they would be one of the best teams in the state.”
They couldn’t. The Whippets outscored the Wildcats 18-9 in the third quarter to take a 15-point lead, then added 28 in the final period.
The runaway gave Bailey the opportunity to use some of his younger players in the fourth quarter and he liked what he saw.
Kosciusko was led by the hot shooting of Cory Guyton Jr. and Jamarien Nash. Guyton connected on 8 of 12 shots for a game-high 22 points. Nash was 6 of 10 for 18 points.
Girls
The Lady Whippets lost to Louisville 48-39 to fall to 3-2 in region play, two games behind Louisville. Both losses were to the Lady Wildcats.
“They play great defense and they made some shots in this game,” Kosciusko coach Cory Guyton said of Louisville. “In the fourth quarter they made some huge shots.”
Kaleysha Miller had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Whippets, Morgan Brown nine and five.
The Whippets and Lady Whippets have region games at Yazoo City Friday. Both had easy wins when the teams met January 17, the Whippets 63-38 and the Lady Whippets 50-29.
