Déjà vu, yes, I have been right here many times before. The few days before school begins for another year. I have three in college, one in middle elementary, one in junior high and three in high school this year. We have seniors! That’s extraordinary and actually overwhelming. I have cried at all the other grandchildren’s graduations, and I wonder if I’ll have enough tears to get me through this one.
I have mentioned that they are our triplets. One born in September, one in November and one in December. They are all beautiful boys and well-mannered and respectful. They have been raised to be excellent grown men. One is into soccer, golf and weightlifting. Another is a hard worker and has worked with a lawn and garden company this summer. The baby of the three is into four wheelers, trucks and hunting. All three are poles apart but have one thing in common — Meme’s boys!
We have one that will be changing schools for his senior year as he believes he will learn better in a smaller class of seniors. He will be going to a county school, the same one his Pawpaw graduated from 60 years ago. This, to me, just closes the circle that began so long ago. The younger of these two will also be attending, and this will be his first real year of public school. He was educated in a small Christian school for six years and then homeschooled for two so he will certainly have a new learning experience. The other two seniors will walk the same ground that I walked in 1963. Another circle completing.
I sit here and ponder just how and where have all the years have gone. I remember watching all three of these boys jump from the car as they entered preschool classes. Well, to be honest, one of them had to almost be dragged from the car. I know it seems like such a long stretch of time for them but not to me. I anticipate the beginning of their adult lives, to see what they become other than really good men. But it’s disconcerting and heartrending to me to see my triplets grow up.
It’s so hot. I love cold desserts, so here’s one with only three ingredients.
STRAWBERRY ICEBOX CAKE
5 cups sweetened whip cream
11 large graham crackers
3 cups chopped strawberries, sprinkled with sugar or Splenda
Spread a thin layer of whipped cream in the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking dish and layer graham crackers on top. Sprinkle with 1/3 of the strawberries. Then add a layer of whipped cream and continue to layer ending with strawberries on top. Refrigerate for at least three hours.
