A remote-controlled stump grinder removes the remains of a large tree near the Attala County Courthouse on Monday, Sept. 14. The tree was damaged during a severe thunderstorm that moved through Kosciusko on Aug. 19, when its top snapped and fell onto three vehicles parked along the Jackson Street side of Courthouse Square. Crews cleared the fallen tree and other debris from the square in approximately 45 minutes following the storm, but the stump remained until Monday’s cleanup operation. An operator guided the specialized machine from a safe distance as it ground the stump and roots below ground level, completing another stage in restoring the courthouse grounds.
