The Attala County Board of Supervisors approved the county’s 2022-2023 budget following a Sept. 13 public hearing.
The county budget for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30 has a beginning cash balance of $20,618,204 and total revenues of $12,448,595. The total expenditures are $16,431,492 with an ending balance of $16,635,307. Sixty-eight percent of the budget revenue is property tax.
There will be a budget increase to fund the Attala County School District. The district’s ad valorem request for operations was $4,778,535. That is over $185,000 more than the district requested last year. The county also funds the Kosciusko-Attala Career Tech Center, which needs a new roof.
The tax levy will increase from 102.28 mills to 102.97 mills. The tax levy includes six sections, with the school district at 51%, general government at 33%, roads and bridges at 11%, Holmes Community College at 3%, the library at 2% and hospital bonds at 0.56%. The hospital bonds are the only debt owed by the county.
According to Tony Green, who works with North Central Planning and Development, “One of the biggest changes to the budget” is the county is taking on E-911, which was formerly the responsibility of the city of Kosciusko. Attala E-911 is a communications center that provides and maintains emergency telephone answering and dispatching service.
Two members of the public attended the hearing and asked questions about the budget.
