Six fatality crashes were recorded across Mississippi over the Independence Day weekend by the Mississippi Highway Patrol, none of which were recorded by Troop D.
Troop D, which covers Attala, Holmes, Carroll, Montgomery, Grenada, Leflore, Sunflower, Humphreys, Washington and Bolivar counties had zero fatalities. The troop recorded a total of eight injuries in 13 vehicle accidents.
The Troop arrested 29 on DUI charges, one on a drug arrest and three on felony arrests. Also ticketed were 21 for seat belt violations and 12 for child restraint violations.
Troop M in southwest Mississippi recorded one fatality on MS-44 in Pike County. A pedestrian walking eastbound in a lane of traffic was struck by vehicle also traveling eastbound on MS44. The pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene.
Troop H recorded threee fatalities in Lauderdale and Neshoba Counties. On Saturday, a 1996 Chevrolet pickup driven by Willie R. King of Meridian was traveling southbound on MS-145 and attempted to make a left turn across traffic. A 1999 Chevrolet pickup driven by Frank D. Overby of Meridian was traveling northbound on MS-145 and collided with the right side of the truck driven by King. King was transported to a local hospital and died later due to injuries sustained in the crash.
On Sunday, a 1997 Mitsubishi passenger car driven by Colton McConnell of Meridian was traveling southbound on MS-19. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled over, partially ejecting the driver who was pronounced dead on scene, according to authorities.
A head-on collision involving one fatality occurred on MS-19 in Neshoba County on Sunday, while Troop E recorded fatalities in Panola and Quitman counties on Monday.
