Renovation work at the historic Cotesworth Plantation in Carroll County is nearly complete.
State Senator Lydia Chassaniol, who has led the charge to restore the property, told members of the Kosciusko Rotary Club on Monday that she expects the project to be open to the public by October. Chassaniol represents district 14 which includes Attala, Carroll, Grenada, Leflore, Montgomery, Panola, Tallahatchie and Yalobusha.
The property, which sits a few miles north of Carrollton, started out as a stagecoach inn before it was purchased by Carroll County lawyer James Zachariah “JZ” George, who went on to become a United States Senator. The building and an adjoining hexagonal library on the south lawn remained in the George family for multiple generations.
The house was acquired by the Cotesworth Culture and Heritage Center, a 501 (c)3 in 2013 in the hopes of resorting the house for public use as an educational center, heritage site and event venue.
The center is scheduled to be open in October for the annual Carrollton Pilgrimage and Pioneer Day.
