Kosciusko native Sen. Sally Burchfield Doty, announced Monday she has qualified as a Republican candidate for the U.S. 3rd Congressional District seat.
Doty, a Brookhaven attorney, is serving her second term in the Mississippi state legislature. She is the daughter of the late Charles Burchfield of Kosciusko and Mrs. Bettie Burchfield, who now resides in Brookhaven.
Doty notes on her website that she has received an “A” rating during each year of her service from BIPEC (Business and Industry Political Education Committee). During the 2017 Legislative Session she states she played a key role in the passage of Campaign Finance Reform and long-needed revisions to the Mississippi Election Code.
Doty joins four other candidates in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper, who has announced he is not seeking re-election.
Doty currently chairs the Senate Energy Committee and is vice chairwoman of Judiciary A. She has been a part of Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves leadership team. She is one of five senators serving on the Joint Legislative Budget Committee.
Doty focuses much of her time and attention on efforts to lower the teen pregnancy rate in Mississippi. She has a leadership role in Governor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Teen Pregnancy Prevention, and authored legislation to address the high rate of unplanned pregnancy among college students.
Doty, who practices law in Brookhaven, previously served on the faculty of Mississippi College School of Law as the director of Legal Writing. She is a graduate of Kosciusko High School, Mississippi College School of Law and Mississippi University for Women.
