After a season to remember for the Kosciusko Lady Whippet fastpitch team, the book can finally close on the best chapter in the history of the program. After claiming the Region 4-4A title the Lady Whippets swept through the Class 4A North Playoffs before meeting up with Caledonia for the MHSAA Class 4A North Championship series. After an 8-2 Game 1 setback on the road to the Lady Feds, the Lady Whippets swept Caledonia at home in Games 2 and 3 by scores of 9-1 and 8-3 to claim their first-ever MHSAA Class 4A North title and a trip to the Class 4A State Championship series against the Class 4A South champion North Pike Lady Jaguars.
In the Lady Whippets’ game one 7-0 loss last Wednesday night at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland, Katie Lawrence got the start and pitched four innings, yielding six runs on eight hits while striking out two Lady Jaguars. Katie Mitchell finished up the contest, surrendering one run on one hit while striking out five. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Maddy Gilmore with a single; Josie Meggs with a single and AnnaLeigh Jones with a double.
On Friday night in the Lady Whippets’ game two 5-0 loss to the Lady Jaguars, Mitchell got the start and pitched five innings, yielding five runs on seven hits. Lawrence finished up on the mound yielding no hits or runs in one inning of work. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Jones with a single; Mitchell with a single and Meggs with a single.
With the two losses in the championship series the Lady Whippets finished the season with a 26-9 overall record.
“I am tremendously proud of this group of young ladies,” said Lady Whippet head coach Tony Terry. “They had a relentless spirit and competed till the last out. It was a great ride and I thing they represented K O well and were a team the town can be proud of.”
For their efforts in the MHSAA Class 4A Championship series, Katie Lawrence, Katie Mitchell and Josie Meggs were named to the All-Tournament team.
