Again, here is a shout out to all two of my column readers…your faithfulness to my little soap box has not gone unnoticed. Thank you for reading and thank you for, well, reading. I can’t guarantee that you will be better informed or anything of that nature after giving up a few minutes of your life to read through
my musings, but I can guarantee that you will have a few minutes that you will never get back. For that I am truly sorry and hopefully my next column will pique your interest and win me many awards for the literary genius that I spew onto this computer screen as I type.
As most of you know, sports is my thing here at The Star-Herald, but lately my job title has changed somewhat because I cover a few things other than where the lights are on with folks running and jumping and throwing and such. It has been different; you know, it’s kind of like trying to hit a curveball when you are sitting dead red on a fastball with a full count. However, learning to branch out somewhat and writing about a property dispute or a training school for plumbers has somewhat stretched me on how to write about certain things without a sports slant to it. You must first understand that nearly everything in my life has a sports slant to it and learning to tone that down somewhat has been a process. I have written about water systems and repairs to bridges and stuff and though maybe not perfect, it all went a little better than I expected. The good thing about it was that I get to meet folks I never knew before and that has been and continues to be a neat experience. I feel that I was able to take that curve ball the other way for a single, or at least got a piece of it.
I did not think there was much to news other than sports, but I have been somewhat corrected since I started to write about and cover other things. Don’t get me wrong; sports is what I do and what I am passionate about. However, I will do what I have to do in the meantime and hopefully do it well so that I will not run one of my two column readers off.
On to other things really quickly before I close out this column. Bowl games are about to start and football will once again rule every day through the first of January until the National Championship game, which could very well be Bama vs. Georgia in what the experts have called a “down year” for the SEC. Oh well, if half of the playoff teams are from one conference in a down year, what does that say about all of college football? Hopefully, your team is in a bowl game and you still have that to look forward to as well as the NFL, if you are still interested…which is hard at this point, especially after watching that Saints/Falcons game last Thursday night. What a travesty that game was to watch and if you are in to conspiracy theories about referees and stuff, there you go.
Don’t forget to support our local basketball teams as they continue to hit the hardwood throughout December and most have done quite well to this point and soccer will give you a chance to sit outside of a gym if you want to catch some outdoor sporting action, which leads me to a good question to ask, hypothetically of course. Why will it be 75 degrees on Wednesday but when the soccer match starts at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday it is like minus 12 degrees? I just don’t understand why that is. Those athletes are tough and play in some frigid conditions I am here to tell you. Soccer and warmth are kind of like oil and water, they just don’t mix. Kind of like a freaknasty curveball and an overanxious, free swinging Aaron Judge wannabe.
