Every now and then I get the notion to do something before it needs to be done. I am not quite sure when that was, but it did happen.
Some folks live their lives in a very organized manner, planning every minute of their days to avoid surprises, which to me seems to take the fun out of the whole "grab bag" way of doing things.
I am not totally irresponsible; I am just not a planner when it comes to mapping out my week.
I know where and when I have to be somewhere, but I cannot say what I am going to have for supper or what I will be wearing tomorrow.
Now don't get me wrong. I am thankful for the plans that built my home and the engineering that aent into the automobile I drive, but I'm just not into meticulously planning every aspect of the next four minutes of my life.
Maybe it is the ADD; I do not know, but I kind of go into sensory overload when presented with too many options.
Attention deficit disorder (ADD) can be a problem if you have it.
If you do not have it, you probably know someone who does have it, and if you know me, well, there you go.
I embrace ADD and do my best to let it be a positive in my life and it allows me to be the king of multi-tasking.
Of course multi-tasking usually involves something getting finished at some point. I actually have the ability to talk about the Iran Crisis and how it defined the Carter administration while stopping on the dime to discuss the advantages of a yellow lab over a chocolate lab while keeping black an option.
So, ADD is not such a bad thing because I can somewhat keep up with all the conversations going on in a room at any given time.
But, sometimes I think I subconsciously zone in or out of conversations depending on subject matter.
This sensory overload is really put to the test when football season starts. But football season does make me a planner.
My situation is somewhat unique because I am on a junior college sideline on Thursday nights, a high school sideline on Friday nights and on some major college sideline on Saturdays.
This is the only time of year when I can map out so many days and say exactly where I will be, God willing, on Thursday through Saturday.
Even though I spend all day on a sideline on Saturday, I still DVR the big games so that I can watch when I get home, an activity that my wife does not yet understand. After the final game on Saturday night, it is time for Sportscenter.
Come Sunday, it is the remote, my recliner and me after church.
There is just no better way to take in a Saints game. That old recliner and I are buds, and it is aligned precisely in the center of the television so that I can keep up with the flow of the game from left to right.
I reckon planning is not so bad after all. Especially when it comes to sports, I am just not quite sure what I will be doing tomorrow.
