The Lady Whippet fastpitch team (1-1) started the season with a win over Ethel (0-2) 8-0 and a close, high-scoring loss to Choctaw Central last Friday and Saturday.
In the opening win over Ethel, the Lady Whippets sent Katie Lawrence to the mound where she pitched seven shutout innings of three-hit ball while striking out 11. The offensive leaders for Kosciusko were AnnaLeigh Jones with two runs scored; Josie Meggs with two singles and one run scored; Katie Mitchell with a single and one run scored; Abigail Myers with a triple and one run scored; Audrey Claire (A.C.) Henderson with one run scored; Madeline McCown with a double and one run scored and Melissa Gowan with two singles and one run scored.
The offensive leaders for the Lady Tigers were Madison Odom with a single and Breanna Blaine with a single. Kambrie Hodges got the start for Ethel and struck out three while walking four.
“We played a great ballgame until the fifth,” said Ethel head coach Beth Thompson. “Their offense made our defense make errors.”
In Saturday’s contest against Choctaw Central, the Lady Whippets sent Maddy Gilmore to the mound. Gilmore surrendered four hits and three walks in three innings pitched while striking out three. Mitchell finished the contest going four innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four.
The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Meggs with a triple and two runs scored; Gowan with a double, single and one run scored; Mitchell with a single; Myers with a single and one run scored; Gilmore with a single, double and one run scored; A.C. Henderson with two singles and two runs scored; McCown with two singles and one run scored; Gabbie Kelley with a triple and Jones with one run scored.
The Lady Tigers also fell to Choctaw Central by a score of 7-0. Jessica Mitchell got the start and struck out three while walking one and the offensive leaders were Brooklyn Pitt with a single; Madison Odom with a single and Mitchell with a single.
The Lady Whippets played at Nanih Waiya on Tuesday and will host Neshoba Central on Thursday at 5 p.m. and Choctaw County on Friday at 5 p.m. as well. The Lady Tigers hosted East Webster on Tuesday and will travel to Winona on Thursday for a 5 p.m. contest.
