The Lady Whippets began their title defense by sweeping Senatobia by scores of 20-7 and 8-2 last week in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A postseason.
After sweeping Corinth with wins Friday and Saturday, Kosciusko (31-1) secured its spot in the North State championship series.
Kosy will be facing off with Tishomingo this weekend with game one being on Friday and Games two and three (if necessary) on Saturday.
“We played two good softball teams that did a lot of things to put pressure on us,” Kosciusko coach Tony Terry said. “We responded and showed some resiliency and mental toughness. I was proud of our approach. We have been in tough spots before, so that helps us out in close games.”
In Game 1 of the Lady Whippets’ first-round series, Kelly Hood powered Kosciusko with enough offense. She finished a double short of hitting for the cycle, as she hit a home run, a triple and two singles. She tallied six runs. Josie Meggs and Campbell Blaine added triples to go with Meggs’ two singles.
Katie Mitchell and Laken Milner hit three triples, while Brooke Mitchell and Maddie Gilmore contributed two singles apiece.
Katie Mitchell scattered six hits and struck out four over seven innings.
Gilmore picked up the pitching win in Game 2. She allowed six hits and tallied five strikeouts in the contest.
AnnaLeigh Jones led the way with three singles. Gilmore chipped in with two singles and Hood, Blaine and Brooke Mitchell added singles.
