The Kosciusko Whippet baseball team had its season come to a close on Monday night in Game 3 of the second round of the MHSAA Class 4A North Playoffs against the Itawamba AHS Indians. The Indians won the best-of-three series two games to one, losing only once to the Whippets on Friday night by a score of 6-4 before winning 10-0 on Saturday in Fulton and clinching the series with a 4-3, eight-inning affair on Monday night back in Kosciusko. The Whippets finished the year with a 25-6 overall record and were the Region 4-4A Champions with a perfect 10-0 mark.
In Friday night’s 6-4 win over the Indians, Jerod Meggs got the start and pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out eight hitters. Bryce Oakes notched the save with .2 of an inning pitched, yielding no runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one. The offensive leaders for the Whippets were Jeremy Deason with a single; Brandon Black with two runs scored; Daulton Lindsey with one run scored; Meggs with a double and two RBI; Jatavious Herron with a single and one run scored; Ethan Gowan with one run scored.
On Saturday in Game 2 in Fulton, Deason got the start and loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out two Indian hitters.
Gowan pitched .2 of an inning in relief and yielded three runs on three hits and Rusty Atkinson allowed a hit and a run while walking one. The offensive leaders for the Whippets were Logan Fancher with a double and Walker Yuille with a single.
In the series finale on Monday night back in Kosciusko, Yuille got the start, allowing three runs (none earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out three.
Oakes came on in relief and took the loss, yielding one run (none earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out one in 3.1 innings of work. The offensive leaders for the Whippets in the eight-inning contest were Deason with a single and one run scored; Clark Dean with a single; Fancher with a single and two RBI; Chase Morgan with a single; Meggs with a single; Micah Parker with a single; Loftin Price with a single; Herron with two singles and two runs scored and Yuille with a single and an RBI.
With the win, the Itawamba Indians move on to the MHSAA Class 4A North quarterfinals on Thursday night against Ripley.
