Despite the rain and a few setbacks due to the weather, the Kosciusko Whippet baseball team got things underway on Saturday at home against Grenada. The Whippets fell 12-5 in that contest but rebounded to sweep Yazoo City on Monday night by scores of 13-1 and 16-1 respectively to push their record to 2-1.
In the Whippets’ loss to Grenada, Ethan Gowan got the start and pitched two innings, allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out four Grenada batters. Justin Nunn came on in relief of Gowan and pitched one inning, yielding no runs on three hits while walking none. Will Cook took the bump for the Whippets after Nunn’s exit and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on just two hits while walking three and striking out one. Chase Morgan followed Cook to finish out the contest and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out one.
The offensive leaders for the Whippets were Micah Parker with a single and a double with two runs scored; Logan Fancher with a single and one run scored; Walker Yuille with a single; Brandon Black with a single; Jon Deason with one run scored; Clark Dean with an RBI and Morgan with an RBI and one run scored.
In the Whippets 13-1, game one win over Yazoo City on Monday night, Parker, Tyler Van Cise, Gowan and Walker Yuille all took the bump for Kosy. Parker pitched one inning and gave up no runs on one hit while striking out one; Van Cise pitched 1.1 innings and allowed no runs on one hit while walking one and striking out two; Gowan gave up one earned run on one hit and a walk while striking out one in .2 of an inning and Walker Yuille surrendered no runs and no hits while walking one and striking out one in one inning pitched.
The offensive leaders for the Whippets were Dean with single and two runs scored; Fancher with two runs scored and an RBI; Black with two runs scored; Deason with one run scored; Morgan with a double and two singles with two runs scored and three RBI; Parker with a single and two runs scored; Gowan with a double and one run scored with one RBI and Walker Yuille with a single and one run scored.
In game two on Monday night, Nolen Yuille, Dean, Deason, Morgan and El’Darius Roby all pitched for the Whippets. Nolen Yuille allowed no runs or hits and struck on one in one inning of work; Dean allowed a run (earned) one no hits and one walk in one inning of work; Deason surrendered no runs or hits while striking out three and walking one; Morgan allowed no hits, runs or walks in an inning of work and Roby gave up no runs or hits while striking out two and walking one.
The offensive leaders for the Whippets in game two against Yazoo City were Evan Scott with one run scored; Dean with a single, one run scored and two RBI; Fancher with a single and a double with two runs scored; Black with a single and one run scored; Hunter Blaylock with a single and two RBI; Deason with two singles, one run scored and one RBI; Morgan with a single, one run scored and one RBI; Parker with a single, two runs scored and two RBI; Lucas Price with a single and one run scored; Matthew Allen with one run scored; Roby with two runs scored and one RBI; Cook with a single, one run scored and one RBI; Gowan with a single and one RBI; River Burrell with one run scored and Walker Yuille with two singles and a double with four RBI and one run scored.
The Whippets traveled to Ridgeland on Tuesday night and will be on the road once again on Thursday when they make the drive to West Point for a 6 p.m. contest. Kosy will then host Choctaw County on Friday at 5 p.m. and West Point on Saturday at 1 p.m. before hitting the road once again next Tuesday night to take on Region 4-4A foe Leake Central at 7 p.m.
