First-year Kosciusko head baseball coach Derrik Boland is not wasting any time stamping his imprint on his new program. Last week, the school installed six cameras — including a security camera — at the baseball stadium.
Boland and his assistants will now be able to watch footage of their players during practices and games and critique their efforts.
“I have a way to film every practice, every game and every swing they take on the field, every pitch they throw on the field,” Boland said. “It’s constantly running.”
The cameras boast 4K-quality recording capabilities, and Boland said each one will give him “real-time” tracking that will allow him to slow each player’s movement down “frame by frame.”
“Like I told our parents when I presented it to them in our first meeting, my No. 1 job as far as coaching is making your sons into good men, but the No. 2 part isn’t winning; it’s developing your sons into the best baseball players they can possibly be,” Boland said. “If you do that, it takes care of the winning part, usually.”
Two cameras are placed at the far end of each dugout and are even with the pitcher’s mound, which will allow Boland to get a good view of his pitcher from each side. One camera is situated at the front of the dugout, even with home plate, and will capture hitters from both sides. Another camera is installed just below the center window of the press box and will capture the entire field.
“It’s definitely going to help us,” Boland said. “I’ve probably had 20 coaches call me that saw the (Twitter) post and asked me where we got them, how we got them and how much they were. I might have started something here.”
