Kosciusko’s baseball team went 2-1 last week in the second full week of baseball action.
The Whippets opened the week with a 3-0 loss to Ridgeland but bounced back with a pair of wins. Kosciusko defeated West Point, 10-0, on Friday, and it earned an 11-5 win on Saturday against Grenada.
Nolen Yuille went five innings and threw 62 pitches against West Point on Friday to receive the pitching win. He struck out five, walked one and allowed one hit.
“He just looked solid,” Kosciusko coach Derrik Boland said of Yuille. “It was just one of those nights where he was just on. That’s the guy we were hoping to see. He gives us a chance when he comes out and his stuff is like that. He gives us a chance against anybody.”
Walker Hill, Taylor VanCise and Will Cook finished with two hits apiece. Evan Scott and River Burrell scratched out the Whippets' other two hits.
VanCise and Scott each knocked in two RBIs. Matthew Allen, Lucas Price, Walker Hill, Cook and Burrell each tallied one RBI.
“Our bats finally started coming alive Friday night,” Boland said. “I think we ended up finishing with eight hits and scored 10 runs. They made a few errors that helped us out and gave us a chance to score some more runs.”
Burrell, Cook, Hill, McBride and Kaylan Powell recorded stolen bases.
Parker Ryals threw seven innings of four-run ball to help lift Kosciusko to an 11-5 win against Grenada on Saturday. Ryals struck out two batters and allowed nine hits.
“Saturday was kind of the first test, in my opinion,” Boland said. “Grenada is a very, very good baseball team. They’re solid all the way around defensively. They’re good everywhere.”
VanCise paced the Whippets with four RBIs and two hits. One of VanCise’s hits resulted in a double. Cook added another two RBIs and two runs. Allen recorded two RBIs, while Price and Yuille each chipped in with one. McBride added a stolen base.
Hill, VanCise, Cook and Powell had hits against Ridgeland on Tuesday. Will tallied a stolen base.
McBride pitched 3 and 1/3 innings and allowed four hits, two earned runs and three walks. He struck out two. VanCise went 2 and 2/3 innings. VanCise struck out two and walked one.
“A loss, to me, is a learning experience,” Boland said. “Even though we lost, we learned a lot about our guys. They kept fighting even though they were down 3-0 after the first two innings. They continued to fight and scratch and claw.”
Kosciusko hosts Ethel on Tuesday and travels to Ethel on Friday. The Whippets had a road trip to West Point on Saturday.
