The Lady Whippets, who are 19-5 overall and 8-1 in Region 4-4A play, played West Lauderdale on Tuesday night for the region championship. Results were not in at press time, but if the Lady Whippets win the title they will play next Tuesday as a No. 1 seed at home.
If the Lady Whippets fell to West Lauderdale, they will travel to Tishomingo County on Friday night in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 4A North State Playoffs. Game 2 and 3, if necessary, will be in Kosciusko on Saturday.
The Lady Whippets played five times last week and won four of them, with
the only loss coming in a doubleheader split with the Northwest Rankin Lady Cougars by a score of 2-1. The Lady Whippets defeated Leake Central 7-1 last Tuesday night, crushed Louisville 11-1 on Wednesday night, thumped Noxubee County 17-0 on Thursday night and defeated Northwest Rankin 7-0 in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Good Friday.
In last Tuesday’s win over Leake Central, Katie Lawrence got the start and win and yielded only one run on two hits while striking out nine Lady Gators. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Maddy Gilmore with two singles; Josie Meggs with a single and one run scored; Madeline McCown with a double and two runs scored; Katie Mitchell with a triple and one run scored; Audrey Claire Henderson with a triple; Abigail Myers with a single and one run scored; Kelly Hood with one run scored and Melissa Gowan with one run scored.
In Wednesday’s 11-1 win over the Louisville Lady Wildcats Lawrence got the start and win by surrendering one run on three hits while striking out nine hitters. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Hood with two singles and two runs scored; Meggs with a single and two runs scored; McCown with a single, triple and two runs scored; Mitchell with three singles and one run scored; Gilmore with a double, single and one run scored; AnnaLeigh Jones with a home run and two runs scored; Henderson with a single and Gabbie Kelley with one run scored.
On Thursday night Gilmore got the start and win for the Lady Whippets against Noxubee County, surrendering no runs on one hit while striking out six in two innings pitched. Sarah Caroline Henderson pitched the final inning for the Lady Whippets and struck out all three hitters she faced. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Meggs with two singles a double, four RBI and three runs scored; Gilmore with a homerun, two singles, three RBI and one run scored; Audrey Claire Henderson with a triple and two runs scored; Joie Johnson with a home run, one run scored and four RBI; Hood with three runs scored; Laken Milner with one run scored; Jones with two runs scored; Mackenzie Ryals with two runs scored and Kelley with two runs scored.
On Friday the Lady Whippets sent Mitchell to the mound in Game 1 of the doubleheader with Northwest Rankin and she surrendered no runs on two hits while striking out two hitters in seven complete. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Meggs with two singles and one run scored; McCown with a single and one run scored; Mitchell with a single; Jones with two singles, a double and one run scored;Gilmore with a single; Audrey Claire Henderson with a single; Myers with a single and one run scored; Gowan with two singles and two runs scored and Emmagail Kelley with a run scored.
