Kosciusko suffered its first and second losses of the 2018 fast-pitch softball season last week, but the Lady Whippets also picked up two wins and remained unbeaten in district play.
The losses came Friday to Class 6A Northwest Rankin, which pulled away late to post an 11-2 win and also earn a 6-2, extra-inning win in a
doubleheader.
Kosy started the week with a 10-3 win over Choctaw County on Monday and hammered Louisville 14-0 on Tuesday. The Lady Whippets entered Easter with a record of 14-2 overall and 2-0 in division play.
This week, the team was scheduled to go to Caledonia Monday before a big division game at New Hope Thursday. Saturday, the Lady Whippets are slated to go to Senatobia for a doubleheader.
Next week, Kosciusko hosts Louisville on Tuesday (April 10), entertains Leake Central on Thursday (April 12) and hosts Lake on Friday (April13).
Last Monday, the Lady Whippets toppled Choctaw County 10-3 as five players had two hits each.
AnnaLeigh Jones singled, tripled, scored twice and had an RBI and Kelly Hood singled, tripled, scored and drove in one.
Josie Meggs had two hits, two runs, two RBIs and five stolen bases; Maddy Gilmore singled, doubled, scored and drove in two; Abigail Myers had two
hits, a run and an RBI.
Gabbie Kelley tripled, scored and drove in two, while Madeline McCown and Brooke Mitchell both scored once.
Katie Mitchell was the winning pitcher, striking out eight and allowing no earned runs in a complete-game effort.
On Tuesday, Kosciusko blanked Louisville 14-0 behind a big performance from Gilmore – who went 3-for-3 at the plate and was also the winning pitcher.
She had three singles and drove in five runs at the plate, and she threw a five-inning shutout in the circle – allowing just three hits and striking out seven.
Sarah Caroline Henderson added a single, double, two runs and an RBI and Meggs doubled, scored three times and drove in a run.
Hood singled, scored three times and had an RBI; Katie Mitchell doubled; McCown singled; Brooke Mitchell scored three runs; Myers, Jones and Mackenzie Ryals all scored once.
In the opener against Northwest Rankin on Friday, Kosciusko trailed just 4-2 before the visiting Lady Cougars scored five times in the top of the sixth to take control.
Katie Mitchell took the loss in the circle with Henderson finishing. Hood and Meggs each scored once.
In the nightcap, the teams were knotted 1-1 and went to extra innings, where Northwest Rankin scored five times in the top of the eighth and held on for the win.
Myers doubled and scored, Henderson singled and Brooke Mitchell scored for Kosy.
Gilmore threw 7.1 innings and took the loss, with Emmagail Kelly finishing.
