Kosciusko’s volleyball program saw its win streak snapped late last week, but the loss has not dampened the Lady Whippets’ enthusiasm.
The Lady Whippets opened last week with a three-set sweep against region foe Louisville. They earned scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-14 to collect their fifth straight win.
Lanier swept Kosciusko — 25-18, 25-13 and 25-14 — last Thursday.
The Kosciusko-Lanier contest was a rematch from Aug. 29 when Lanier won 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-23.
“They’re getting better every game,” Kosciusko coach Lauren Peresich said of her girls. “We may not have won against Lanier, but they looked a lot better against Lanier than they did the first time. Really, as a coach, that’s all I can ask for.”
The Lady Whippets this week will have a longer than usual delay before they take the court again. Peresich said the time will be used to fine-tune her players’ game as they prepare for their late-season surge.
“Our next game isn’t until Thursday, so we have three days to really get some good practice in and try to correct some things,” Peresich said.
Kosciusko and Yazoo City will meet next Thursday for a contest that will carry playoff implications. As of Monday, Kosciusko sits at second place in the region standings behind undefeated Lanier. Louisville is in third place with winless Yazoo City occupying last place at fourth.
“The top two go to the state playoffs,” Peresich said. “I feel confident in my girls. I feel like if we’re playing as a unit and as a team, we can hopefully secure that No. 2 spot.”
Kosciusko swept Yazoo City in three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-12 on Sept. 10.
