More than 55 players took the field Monday for Kosciusko High School’s first official football practice of the season.
The afternoon practice ran two hours and 15 minutes, with players set to return on Tuesday for day two. Whippet players donned helmets and shorts for their camp opener, and they will remain in that attire until Thursday when they add shoulder pads.
According to Kosciusko head football coach Kelly Causey, Monday participation was in line with what he has received the last two seasons.
“I thought it went great,” Causey said. “The kids were real excited and showed a lot of pep in their step. We were in shorts, and it’s kind of hard to get stuff done, but I thought the kids did a great job and gave us a lot of effort throughout the whole day. They seem to be focused, and we talked before about focusing on what our goals are — about winning district and then going throughout state. I think today we took one step in that direction.”
The Whippets are set to open the 2019 regular season at home on Thursday, Aug. 22 against Yazoo County.
