Both Kosciusko soccer programs saw their seasons come to a close last week in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A soccer playoffs.
The Newton County Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Whippets, 2-0, on Tuesday.
“Newton County was a little bit of a bigger team, a little more physical than we’ve played this year,” Kosciusko coach Greg Cooper said. “They knew how to play using their bodies. They came in and played a really, really good game. Can’t take anything away from those girls. I don’t think it was our night to get that victory.”
The West Lauderdale boys beat the Kosciusko boys, 5-1, also on Tuesday. Will Carter scored the Whippets' lone goal.
“West Lauderdale came in, and we went down 1-0, and we kind of got our composure and we came back and got a goal, 1-1,” said Cooper, who also coaches the Kosciusko boys. “We’ve had some things kind of happen before the game, and just couldn’t really get our minds clear on our job — what we needed to do.”
The Kosciusko girls finished the year 9-7, while the boys ended the season 7-9. Both teams won the Region 3-4A title.
“Overall, I enjoyed it,” Cooper said. “I thought both teams had a great year… I thought both of them really did well. We’re a young team. We had three seniors on the boys and two seniors on the girls’ team. A really young team. I think the future is bright for what we’ve done this year. I look forward to what they build on in the next year.”
