Veteran Kosciusko High School softball coach Tony Terry is not a man that leaves much to chance.
That being his nature, Terry transitioned his Lady Whippets from basic fundamentals preparation to pre-season practice mode on Tuesday, the very day the Mississippi High School Activities Association was set to determine what the 2020-21 sports landscape was going to look like for high school sports across the state.
“We don’t know what may decide,” Terry said on Monday afternoon. “But if they decide to move us to the fall we are going to do our best to get ready for it. We just want to cover ourselves and not be caught off guard.”
He said summer workouts are the norm for high school softball players, but mostly they involve a lot of physical fitness activities, with some batting practice scattered in.
“It’s really different every year,” it’s just according to what fits best for that particular team.
While the Lady Whippets had 24 payers on the roster, this year there are 29 athletes scattered across the varsity and junior-varsity rosters.
The Lady Whippets have several outstanding athletes returning, including four that have already committed to two-year colleges for next year, although the official signing date hasn’t arrived.
Pitcher Emmagail Kelley, first baseman KC Schuler, and second baseball Kelly Hood have all publicly declared their intention to sign with Holmes Community College when the time arrives. Catcher Emma Rush has accepted an offer from Northeast Mississippi Community College, and plans to play for the Lady Tigers.
