Kosciusko officially wrapped up the Region 4-4A fast-pitch softball crown last week with a sweep of Leake Central and a win over Louisville.
The Lady Whippets blanked Louisville 15-0 on Tuesday before taking 10-0 and 12-2 wins over Leake Central later in the week to improve to 18-2 on the season. Kosciusko is a perfect 6-0 in division play.
This week, the Lady Whippets were scheduled to wrap up the regular season with a trip to Nanih Waiya on Monday and a division doubleheader against last-place Noxubee County on Tuesday.
The MHSAA Class 4A state playoffs begin Friday, but Kosciusko will receive a bye as the division champ and will host a yet-to-be-determined opponent in a second-round playoff series beginning April 24. Barring any weather delays, the Lady Whippets will play Tuesday (April 24) and Thursday (April 26) next week in the playoffs.
Last week, Kosy won all three of its contests by at least 10 runs.
In the 15-0 win over Louisville on Tuesday, the Lady Whippets managed just three hits but took advantage of eight LHS walks and six errors.
Abigail Myers singled, scored twice and had an RBI; AnnaLeigh Jones singled, scored and drove in two runs; Katie Mitchell had a single, a run and an RBI to lead the way.
Josie Meggs scored three times; Sarah Caroline Henderson had two runs and an RBI; Kelly Hood scored twice; Madeline McCown, Brooke Mitchell, Campbell Blaine and Gabbie Kelley all scored once; Maddy Gilmore had one RBI.
Gilmore was also the winning pitcher, striking out three while tossing a three-inning, no-hitter.
In the first game against Leake Central, Kosciusko scored twice each in the first three innings to build a 6-0 lead.
Myers had a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run and Meggs also doubled twice and scored to lead the way.
Hood had a single, double and three runs while Gilmore had two hits, three RBIs and two runs. Makenzie Ryals singled and drove in two runs; Jones singled and scored twice; McCown singled and scored; Katie Mitchell singled and drove in one; Kelley had an RBI.
Katie Mitchell was the winning pitcher, giving up just two hits while striking out five.
In the second win over Leake Central, Kosciusko had 12 hits – all singles – and scored four times in the fourth inning to break open a close game.
Henderson had three hits and an RBI and Meggs had two hits, three runs and three RBIs to pace the Lady Whippets.
McCown had two hits and two runs scored while Emma Rush also had two hits and one RBI. Myers singled, scored and had an RBI;
Gilmore had two RBIs; Hood and Mitchell each scored twice; Kathryn Clare Schuler had an RBI; Jones and Blaine scored once apiece.
Gilmore was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings and allowing just one earned run. She scattered four hits and struck out nine.
