Kosciusko’s tennis team was only able to get three matches in before the season was halted by MHSAA officials due to growing coronavirus concerns.
The Whippets went 1-2 in those matches, including a Region 4-4A win.
Kosciusko fell to Forest (4-3) and French Camp (5-1), but the Whippets earned a 7-0 win against region opponent Louisville.
“We have a lot of seniors on this team,” Kosciusko coach Lauren Peresich said. “They’ve been working really hard. We played some pretty good teams to start off with so that we could get ready for our district. I think we’re going to be pretty decent this year.”
Region 4-4A this school year added newcomers Northeast Lauderdale, West Lauderdale and Newton County.
“There are a couple of teams that we’ve never seen before,” Peresich said. “We don’t really know until we go out there, but I try to prepare them as best as I can to face some difficult teams and try to play the hardest regardless of what the score is.”
Peresich said the team will again receive production from players Madison Autry and Lakelynn Fancher.
“They’re kind of my power team,” Peresich said of Autry and Fancher. “They have been since last year. They work really, really well together, and they have different colleges looking at them. Those two are my power team.”
The Whippets added a new talented racket this year in newcomer Anna Caroline Pickle, a senior.
“She’s never played before, but for a first-year player she’s starting varsity, and as a senior, she’s getting her bearings,” Peresich said of Pickle. “She’s doing really decent.”
Peresich also pointed to doubles seniors Parth Patel and William Fiedler for leadership.
“They communicate really well,” Peresich said. “They play to each other’s weaknesses. So if one is not so great at that, the other one will dominate the net for them.”
