Derrik Boland has not officially coached his first game for Kosciusko‚ the baseball team, but he has found ways to impact the program.
Just one month after installing cameras at the Whippets’ baseball field, Boland and his staff are renovating the infield along with other improvement efforts ahead of the new season.
“(We’re) just basically redoing the infield and getting it kind of how I like it to look,” he said.
Boland has installed a 10-foot outfield warning track that spans from foul pole to foul pole. He and his staff have also cut out the base paths from home plate to first base and home plate to third base. Additionally, they have restructured the infield area. Boland said they have brought in close to 30 to 40 tons in infield clay mix, and he believes that phase of the project will be finished this week.
“Some of it was some things that needed to be done, not that there was anything that was wrong with the field; it was just some things as far as maintenance goes,” Boland said. “Building the infield dirt back up, fixing some of the little things that you have to do every five or six years to get the playability the way you want it. I want a playing surface that is good and that people want to come back to and play it.”
