Kosciusko went 2-1 in games last week to improve to 15-4 on the season. The Whippets lone loss came to out-of-region opponent Noxubee County, so Kosciusko was able to keep its Region 4-4A record intact at 3-0.
Jaquan Hall scored a team-high 19 points last Tuesday against Northeast Lauderdale to help the Whippets earn a 69-55 win. Antonio Harmon scored 15, Calvin Banks added 12 and Omarion Cobbins tallied 11.
Harmon posted a team-high 14 points on Friday as Kosciusko cruised past West Lauderdale, 59-21, in a road victory.
Banks scored 12 points, while Hall and Ellis Armon contributed 10 points apiece. The Whippets accounted for 13 steals and 34 rebounds. West Lauderdale didn’t score more than nine points in a quarter.
Noxubee County handed Kosciusko its first loss of the week as the Tigers earned a 46-43 loss on Saturday.
Harmon accounted for 15 points for the Whippets. Hall has 15 rebounds to go with five points. The weekend contest featured seven lead changes. The Whippets led the game on two occasions.
“I think things are pretty good,” Kosciusko coach Eleazarus Greenleaf said. “Any time you can be undefeated in the district, it’s always a good thing. We played some pretty good teams, but the road is only going to get tougher. I think right now, we control our own destiny as far as how far we can go. Right now, I think we’re in pretty good shape.”
Kosciusko this week hosts Leake Central on Tuesday and visits Choctaw Central on Thursday.
GIRLS
The Kosciusko Lady Whippets also went 2-1 in preps hoops action last week.
Jakrya Young’s 19-point effort last Tuesday wasn’t enough to hoist the Lady Whippets as Northeast Lauderdale earned a 47-45 win. Ariel Fleming and Diamond Rayford ended with nine points apiece.
“It was a pretty good week for us,” Kosciusko girls coach Cory Guyton said. “We lost our first district game by two points. It was a disappointing loss for us. We just really couldn’t get it going until about the second half… We missed two free throws in the end, which is common. Things happen, we just have to continue to fight and learn from the mistakes that we made.”
Kosciusko bounced back from its early week loss with a 57-35 win against West Lauderdale on Friday. Ariel Fleming scored a team-high 12 points. D’Naylah Williams scored 11 and Young finished with 10.
The Lady Whippets never trailed in the contest.
“I thought we bounced back well from the loss,” Guyton said. “I thought we responded well with our first district win for the season, and I think that gave us a little motivation.”
Kosciusko closed the week on Saturday with a 45-36 win against Noxubee County. Young led the way with 13 points, Rayford added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Williams finished with 11.
Kosciusko improved to 14-2 overall and 1-2 in Region 4-4A play.
“I thought we had a lot of people contribute,” Guyton said. “I thought *D'Naylah Williams had a good week for us. I would say she was player of the week for this past week. She’s really stepped it up. Jakrya Young is being her. Her shot hasn’t been falling as much as we would like for it to, but she is still being consistent in getting to the basket.”
