After finishing the year 21-7 and reaching the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs, Kosciusko boys basketball programs received postseason recognition for its efforts on the court.
Whippets coach Eleazarus Greenleaf was named Region 4-4A coach of the year, and O’Corya Forrest was selected Region 4-4A player of the year.
Terry Skinner, Antonio Harmon, Quan Hall, Calvin Banks and Forrest were named as First-Team All-Region 4-4A players.
“It feels good,” Greenleaf said. “I’m more excited for the kids than I am for myself. The kids deserved it. They worked hard and put in a lot of work this past offseason to get to where we were and to accomplish the things we accomplished this year. They worked really hard, and they really deserved it. For that, I’m very excited and very happy for them.”
Forrest, a senior, averaged more than a team-high 15 points, three rebounds and two steals per game this season.
“It means a lot for O’Corya,” Greenleaf said. “He didn’t play much his first two years being on the team. Last year was his first of really getting a lot of playing time. He’s a great shooter. You can’t give him much space – he’ll make wide-open shots. He takes a lot of pressure off the guards and off the post players. It was wonderful for him to get the player of the year award after all the things he’s been through.”
Kosciusko Lady Whippets’ players Katie Mitchell and Diamond Rayford were selected to the All-Region 4-4A team after helping to lead the team to a 12-17 season.
Mitchell, a senior, averaged 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds, while Rayford, a junior, finished the season with 4.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
“I really thought they contributed the whole year, so it was well-deserved,” Lady Whippets coach Cory Guyton said. “They were pretty much the leaders of the team most of the year, so it was well-deserved, and they earned it."
