An on-time arrival at French Camp Academy on Monday meant missing nearly half of the runs scored in the FCA, Kosciusko High School slow-pitch matchup.
A ten-run first inning by the visiting Lady Whippets on a rain-slicked field proved to be too much for the Panthers to top.
“We got it started the way you want in slow-pitch,” KHS Head Coach Tony Terry said. “It’s an offensive game.”
Three more KHS runs scored in the second, and a run in the third and fourth respectively totaled 15, which provided enough margin for the game to be called after four.
The FCA lone run came in the top of the fourth and was scored by Abby Leathers.
“Our girls never quit,” FCA Head Coach Todd Chesser said. “They could’ve easily just dropped their heads, but they fought back.
“I was very pleased with that and that’s what I told them. I said, ‘Look guys, when tribulations and trials hit what marks a man or woman is how they face those. Do they lay down and quit? Or, do they fight back?
“I was glad they didn’t quit.”
Terry is both pleased with his team’s early-season performances and sees room to grow. He noted that he would like to see his team return to its traditional strong-defensive form.
“We have a lot of kids who are new to the sport, learning the differences between the two (fast- and slow-pitch),” he said. “We’re making adjustments and hitting the ball a lot better.”
For the Whippets, Josie Meggs had two home runs, had four RBI and scored three times. Kelly Hood and Laken Milner each had a double and both scored twice. Emmagail Kelley had two singles and Kathryn Clare Schuler had a double, single and scored two runs.
KHS is now 2-1 for the season, and FCA is 0-1.
The two teams meet again on Thursday in Kosciusko, at 6 p.m.
