Peggy Means Burchfield, 95, died on Friday, June 30, 2023, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. After the passing of her husband, Alvin Dewitt (A.D.) Burchfield in 2014, she moved from her beloved Mississippi and settled in Newtown, PA at Friends Home and Village where she spent many hours watching the birds by the big front window, doing word puzzles and drinking hot chocolate with staff and residents. After many years in both Smyrna and Marietta, Peggy and A.D. retired happily for many years on Smythe St. in Kosciusko.
She loved cooking for her family and friends, loved rocking grandbabies and great grandbabies to sleep, loved to shop for new clothes to add to her amazing wardrobe and was always up for an adventure that might include a beautiful meal with family and a glass of red wine. She worked for 35 years at Southern Bell in both Mississippi and Georgia…never missing a day of work. She had a quiet disposition yet yielded a strong, deeply intuitive sense of her own life and of the world around her.
Survivors include her daughter, Donna Faye Burchfield and son-in-law Hutch Traver of Philadelphia, PA; son, Alvin “Al” Dewitt Burchfield, Jr. of Watkinsville, GA; grandchildren, Hilary Burchfield, Calie Young, Hannah Burchfield, Levin Traver, and Avery Burchfield; great-grandchildren, Brooks Burchfield, Madeleine Kahikina, Oliver Kahikina, Mazzy Faye Traver, Elliot Kahikina, Sebastian Young, Raiden Richardt, Lillie Young; sister, Patsy Means Dominick.
She is preceded in death by her loving parents Cyrus and Maude Means; brothers, Willie Lowrey Means and Henry Ford Means.
