Prom!
Do you remember your first prom?
I do, except it was not exactly a prom. It was a Valentine Banquet at the First Baptist Church and I was 12 years old.
The little guy I invited to go with me had been my "boyfriend" for many years. His family and mine were good friends so we had grown up together. We played Roy Rogers and Dale Evans way back when.
I can remember I wore a mid-length sleeveless pink dress with a "pouffy" skirt. He brought me a corsage of pink carnations.
The funniest thing that happened was that at that time, I was actually taller than he was — and I was not even my current five-foot height, so he had asked me not to wear heels.
Our triplets are set to attend their first prom in a few weeks, the eighth grade prom. I am having some difficulty believing they are actually old enough to take a "date" to a dance.
There, of course, is a problem with this also.
Not height this time but shyness.
One of my triplets is very savvy with the opposite sex and already has a date. The other two are not grasping the sense of taking a girl to anything.
Both of the other boys are really cute — I am their Meme — have great personalities and are very outgoing except in the presence of a girl.
They are so shy and introverted that they just pretend to never notice the cute young girls.
I was told that a girl had asked one for his phone number and he just said, "no thanks."
I just wonder how long this malady will conflict these two, my feeling is not too much longer.
I have always heard that girls are more forward than their counterparts when it comes to affairs of the heart and having two boys and a girl I can assure you this is true.
My daughter never had a problem asking a cute boy to go with her any time she needed a date. Most of her girlfriends were the same.
My oldest child told me that things like this just don't mean as much to guys as they do to girls. I can understand. The girls are excited and looking at all the frilly dresses while the boys are begrudgingly dreading the suit.
I remember the exact dresses that I wore so long ago, when I was escorted to the junior prom and then the senior prom. I wore a yellow formal to the junior prom and the zipper broke as I was being "done up" for the night.
You can imagine the drama that ensued. My mother was a seamstress and I was quickly on my way.
My dress for the senior prom was a beautiful red formal that still hangs in a closet, only it was re-vamped for my daughter to wear when she was a baseball queen during her elementary years.
This dress brings back memories for me and for her.
So come on guys … bite the bullet … ask a cute little girl to dress up just for you.
