A week from Friday is the deadline for anyone seeking office in Attala County to file qualifying papers. Primaries will be held August 6.
So far, there is a mix of hot races to watch and incumbents who may very well not have to campaign at all.
The decisions of Chancery Clerk Gerry Taylor and District 2 Supervisor Charles Fancher to not seek re-election after 28 years and 20 years in office, respectively, has probably drawn some folks who may not have run otherwise into the fray.
There are currently two candidates for the office of Chancery Clerk and four seeking the District 2 Supervisor seat. A third Chancery Clerk candidate withdrew from consideration earlier this week.
The other two races drawing the most qualifiers are the Attala County Sheriff and Constable-East races. The incumbent Sheriff faces four challengers and there are three men seeking election as Constable - East.
District 1 and District 3 County Supervisors have one challenger apiece, with the District 4 supervisor currently unchallenged.
Unless others come forward to qualify by March 1, the current Circuit Clerk, Tax Assessor/Collector, Coroner, County Attorney, Justic Court Judge - East, Justic Court Judge - West, and Constable - West will all continue in office by default.
As the campaign season gets underway after March 1, The Star-Herald will look to provide you with all the meaningful information you need in order to cast your ballot as an informed voter.
