Run fast little deer; hide so deep in the undergrowth that a man in camo and bright orange vest cannot possibly find you or perchance see your white tail as you jump over logs and rubble.
Yes, it is deer season again. There are deer stands hidden in the woods just waiting for the huntsman to conceal himself from all the hunted and then to fire a well-placed bullet so that the deer falls where he stands. I guess one can determine that I do not like hunting and killing these animals.
I understand that years ago they were killed to feed hungry families. But for those who just enjoy the hunt and the conquest, I strongly differ. I have several avid hunters in my family. The only way I can accept their pastimes is if they truly eat the meat.
It seems as if at this time of the year the deer begin to move more and can readily be seen. I nearly hit two that were coming out of our yard a few nights ago. My husband was at our barn not long ago when a fairly large deer jumped the barbwire fence that holds our cows and came running at him.
He jumped up in the back of his truck and the deer rammed the fender. We have always seen deer here in the country, but one year one of my sons was watching television at our house in town late one night and something started banging on the back door, over and over.
It seemed as if someone was trying to break in. He slipped out the back door and came around under the carport and there was a large deer trying to get into the house! He said it was a shame that he was not the hunter then that he is now because that would have been such an easy kill.
There will be many hunters in the woods around our ranch because of the number of deer and squirrels running our pastures. I am sure it will sound as if a shooting range is near or perhaps like there is a small war a few miles from our house. I hope that hunters wear orange vests and only kill if hungry!
