To the Editor:
Mr. Gwin is quick to speak ill of the opposition party but he has yet to say anything of substance. I do not recall our current representative, Jason White, speak ill of anyone. We do not know what your thoughts are on issues that affect Mississippians. What is your view on increasing the minimum wage? What is your view on public education? What is your view on protecting the rights of the disenfranchised of this state, such as the African American community or the gay community? What is your view on expanding Medicaid, and if you are against that, what is your plan to save our rural hospitals? How would you improve our crumbling infrastructure? We have hundreds of closed bridges in the state and many in District 48. What are your views on the private prison industry? What is your view on gerrymandering? What are your views on unions?
And no, the GOP is not the party of family values. The GOP needs abortion to keep the base riled up. Again, they passed a bill in the legislature that has no chance of standing and they know it. I think the previous bill, slightly over a million dollars was spent on defending it, and lost, of course. This current bill won’t stand either. Nationally, the GOP controlled all three branches of government for two years. What did they do about abortion? Nothing.
Jason White and I are almost political opposites, but he is personable, approachable and he is chairman of the rules committee so he has clout and I know where he stands on most issues affecting our state. Some of his views I do not agree with, some I do. He knows how to work within the system and, quite frankly, he will remain as our representative until he decides to do something else. I am a Democrat but I am a realist, as well.
