To the editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks to those individuals that assisted with the storm damage that was inflicted on this past Sunday, April 30. Law enforcement, firefighters and road crews handled their duties as expected, whether on-duty or off.
I would also wish to give my most humble and heartfelt appreciation to those private citizens that left their homes and personal affairs behind and selflessly assisted.
The list is too lengthy to name or remember, but people like the young man named Hunter on a Mahindra tractor. Rodney Bruce and his family who provided a saw, large tractor, and a UTV, as well as Scooter Blount and Joe Ellis. The Jeff and Sherri Dean family were seen, as did people unrecognized were present. These were just isolated individuals seen in this area. Again the names of helpers escape me, but they were too numerous to remember or note here. These people, along with numerous others, entered storm-torn areas throughout the northwestern parts of the county and provided labor and equipment without being asked or summoned.
They worked in a downpour and braved dangerous working conditions and downed power lines to get roadways opened and checked houses to see if anyone was trapped or needed medical assistance. The care and concern that these individuals offered often goes unnoticed and unappreciated by most, but not by me, nor by my deputies. Just when it seems that there is no one in the worked that seems to care about their fellow citizens, the good Lord shows us that decent people still exist and stand up to adversity and offer a helping hand to others.
Thank y’all from the bottom of my hear. I am proud and grateful to serve the people of Attala County.
