To the Editor:
In the Feb. 15 edition of this paper, Ms. Sue Harmon, of Biloxi, MS, alleged that there were lies “spoken by the president” during the recent State of the Union speech to Congress. She then chose to deflect to several random issues rather than cite any examples of lies.
I watched that speech with a proud sense that America is back on track to having a secure and prosperous economy and that the coming tide will lift all boats! When the speech was done I thought to myself, “No one could possibly find anything negative to say about any of it!”
Almost immediately, the usual purveyors of “fake news” accused Trump of every bad “ism” they could conjure up and I realized that I’d underestimated the effects of being trapped in the liberal/progressive alternative universe of “Upside-Down World,” where everything is the exact opposite of reality. This “oppositional reality” is why those on the left are unable to see that the GOP is acting from love. The left wants the government to “give a man a fish” — in exchange for votes of course — and the GOP, in an act of real love, would rather “teach a man to fish,” which reinforces the American work ethic. No work, no eat!
Ms. Harmon sees the “corporations pillaging our treasury,” and as a libertarian/conservative, I see the Treasury pillaging the corporations.
The Venezuelan government is stealing the wealth of Venezuela and the results are tragic. Ms Harmon should be happy that the Trump tax plan has addressed some of the issues she mentioned.
Corporations now have a more proper taxation rate and they are sharing the proceeds in the form of pay raises, profit sharing or bonuses, and these are just the unintended consequences.
Soon millions of workers across the country will be seeing bigger pay checks as they get to keep more of their own money per the original intent of tax legislation.
I assert that the state of the nation is a heck of a lot better than it’s been in decades… and that’s no lie!
