Despite a rise in the median household income, Mississippi remains the poorest state in the country, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey.
The report released last week shows the median household income in 2015 was $40,593, up by 2.2 percent from $39,702 in 2014.
Median means half the household incomes was above $40,593 and half were below it.
However, the state did see a 0.3 percent increase in the estimated Mississippians below the poverty line up to 22 percent. Mississippi has 19th lowest state population and had the fourth highest unemployment rate in 2015. Approximately 11.5 percent earn $10,000 or less annually and only 2.1 percent earn $200,000 or more.
