James Owen Burt, Jr., 81, of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Baton Rouge General Hospital, after battling a long illness. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Jordan Funeral Home in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at North Union Cemetery in Attala County, Mississippi. Mr. Jamey Jordan will officiate the services.
James was born on February 16, 1944, to Jim Owen Burt and Allyne Mayfield Burt in Kosciusko, MS. He graduated in 1962 from Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge and then went on to earn a degree in Geology from Louisiana State University. He served in the US Army Reserve. James was a member of Lanier Baptist Church in Baton Rouge.
James is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Seab Burt of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; son, William (Cara) Burt of Clearwater, Florida; daughter, Laurie (Jamey) Jordan of Olive Branch, Mississippi; Grandchildren, Tyler Jordan, Tucker Jordan, Ethan Jordan, and Emory Burt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim Owen Burt and Allyne Mayfield Burt.
James was retired from the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources and State Highway Department. He enjoyed several hobbies including Ham (Amateur) radio operations, repairing classic Cars, and spending time near his hometown in Attala County.
