Hubert Elmo Burkes, 79, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at the Martha Jo Leslie State Veterans Home in Kosciusko.
Hubert was born September 5, 1942, in Attala County to Landreth and Inez Massey Burkes. Hubert was married to Linda Kay Bain for 51 years until her death in May of 2015. He was an active member of the Carson Ridge Baptist Church. He worked at Scarborough Building Supply as a salesman for 30 years and he also served his country in the United States Army where he was stationed in Ft. Hood, Texas. His hobbies were reading, spending time with family and friends, and his cats. Hubert will be remembered for his kind and loving spirit that strengthened everyone he met.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Bain Burkes; his parents; three brothers; and one sister.
Hubert is survived by one daughter, Pennie Shea Burkes of Ackerman, MS; one sister, Hilda Gregory of Kosciusko; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the staff members at the Mississippi State Veterans Home. He was always talking about how nice all of the staff was to him, and a heartfelt thank you to Quality Hospice Care for making his last week on earth comfortable.
Funeral services were Thursday, February 17, 2022, at Carson Ridge Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Dewitt Bain and Rev. Lynn Cain officiated.
Pallbearers were Ennis Howard “Buddy” Burkes, Jr., Alex Landry Burkes, Allen Blaine, Randy Clark, Rodger Clark, and Chance Braswell. Ryder Braswell will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
