Capt. Eugene D. Ellis, USNR Retired 1976, Senior Captain United Airlines Retired 1992
Eugene Daniel Ellis, 86, born August 10, 1932; died December 10, 2018, at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Plano, Texas.
"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born and a time to die." Eugene was born in Attala County, to Ezra D. Ellis and Ruby M. Ellis, and he died in Collin County, Texas. He recalled such memorable experiences as: Serving eleven (11) 
months on West Pacific cruise on CVS-47 with VS-37, 115 day and night straight deck LSO landings. In the Cuban Crisis he served in VS-821 and eighteen (18) months at GITMO and NAS Key West flying anti-shipping patrols off of Cuba in the Devils Triangle as the Assistant Operations Officer responsible for briefing the Admiral daily at GITMO. He served as Executive Officer in VS NAS Los Alamitos, Commanding Officer of RTU 81 at NAS North Island and Commanding Officer of OPCOM NAS Moffett Field. He recalled it was a great experience and a real challenge and honor working with the best officers and men. After the Navy, he joined United Airlines (UAL) as a pilot. He was based from 1965 to 1992 at Los Angeles, Denver and San Francisco. He served as Second Officer in the DC-6, DC-7 and DC-8 and later served as First Officer in the B-727 and DC-10. He later served as Captain in B-727 until his retirement.
Eugene was a graduate of The University of Mississippi at Oxford. He and Marianne Lansdale were married on December 20, 1952, in Kosciusko. Both were members of The United Methodist Church.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Marianne Lansdale Ellis; his infant daughter, Kim Arnee Ellis; his son, Eugene David Ellis.
Capt. Ellis is survived by his son, Martin Daniel Ellis; his daughter-in-law, Kim Roberts Ellis (Kerrville, Texas); his sister, Sylvia Ellis Powell (Mississippi-Tennessee); six grandchildren, Stephanie Marie Ellis (California), Ryan David Ellis (California), Eugene David (Ellis) MacDonald (Washington), Daniel Gene Ellis (Texas), Amber Ellis Thomason (Texas), Alisha Ellis Calisher (California); six great-grandchildren, Evan and Eli Ellis, Colin and Preston Thomason, Kaden and Avery Calisher; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
Memorial Services are schedule for Monday, March 11, 2019, 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Kosciusko. Eugene's nephew, The Rev. Dr. William A. Flint, will be officiating.
