Dr. Herman was an avid hunter as a boy and loved his beagle Shorty. Shorty slept under the bed and kept the boys (and sometimes mom) awake with his snoring. He continued to take his family camping and fishing, instilling a love of animals and the outdoors. After college, he worked in health food science, animal nutrition, and soil and water quality industries in Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Mississippi, and Kansas before becoming an agricultural consultant with Brookside Farms Laboratory Asc. working from McComb. He loved to talk with people and would spend hours yarnin’ and telling jokes. He was well-known at the McComb Golden Corral where he would eat and visit with friends almost daily. His sense of humor showed even to the nurses in his final days. He was devoted to his dog Sandy and she to him, walking her several times a day to the Railroad Park and back. He was a generous neighbor and friend to all who knew him.
