“On Your Mark, Get Set…Read!” is the theme for the 2016 Summer Library Program planned June 9 through July 14, co-sponsored by the Attala County Library and the Mississippi Library Commission.
Registration is now underway with deadline on June 6. The first library card is free and can be obtained by the parent bringing the child to the library along with the child’s social security card and filling out a registration from. Children who are at least five years old, who have finished five- year-old kindergarten and can write their name are eligible to register for a library card.
Programs scheduled are Illusionist Todd Smith on June 7 at 2 p.m.; June 14, Magician Dorian LaChance; June 21, Animal Tales from Mayfield, Ky.; June 28, members of Attala County Martial Arts will show off Taekwondo sparring skills; July 5, Get Heart Smart program with the Mississippi Children’s Museum. All programs begin at 10 a.m. and are designed for children 3-12 years of age. They are all free and open to the public. Because of high numbers of attendance in the past, all of these programs will be held at the Attala County Coliseum.
Children who read 20 books this summer and turn in their reading logs by July 8 will be eligible to attend Waterworks and Fun Day on Tuesday, July 12, at 2 p.m. in the library parking lot. The Kosciusko Fire Department will provide sprays of water and Sunflower Food Stores, refreshments.
On July 14 at 2 p.m. those who read at least 20 books on their level and turn in a reading log will be eligible to attend Fun Day and have their name in the drawing for a bike. One boy’s and one girl’s bike, provided by Wal-Mart, will be given away and must be present. There will be bounce houses, refreshments and door prizes and surprise visitors.
Teen programs
Area teens ages 13-18 are encouraged to participate in “Get In the Game… READ” the Attala County Library teen library program, from June 9 through July 7.
Teens are invited to come to the library and read for the chance to win a prize as well as take part in special events offered throughout the summer.
Events will include Animal Tales from Mayfield, Ky., Taekwondo sparring demo with Attala County Martial Arts, Movie Day, History of Sports in Mississippi with the Mississippi Sports Museum and a Magician’s Workshop with Dorian LaChance.
Junior high and high school students can register to attend the free events at the library. Teens may also sign up to read six books between June 9 and July 7; those who succeed will receive a reading award and be entered in a drawing for a grand prize.
