On Memorial Day, 220 burial flags of veterans will fly during the Aisle of Honor program scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in the pavilion at Parkway Cemetery.
The event is held annually on Memorial Day and Veterans Day and is sponsored by the United Veterans of Attala County.
Veterans are invited to gather at the cemetery and march to the pavilion on the grounds prior to the opening ceremony.
Guest speaker will be Col. (Retired) James R. Proctor Jr., Physical Plant Director for the new North Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Kilmichael which is scheduled to be ready for use in March 2017.
Col. Proctor’s last assignment was as Director of Staff for the Mississippi Air National Guard, assigned to Joint Force Headquarters in Jackson. His primary responsibility was directing military personnel programs within the Mississippi Air National Guard.
Col. Proctor is a native Mississippian who enlisted in the ANG in 1978 in Philadelphia as a Field Radio Teletype Repairman. He transferred to Kingsport, Tenn., in 1983 and to Starkville in 1985 as the Personnel Admin. Center NCO. He has served in various locations and job positions over the past few years as part of the Army National Guard.
The American Legion Riders Post 44 will conduct a flag retirement ceremony following the program.
In case of rain, the program will be moved to the Attala County Coliseum.
