A request for access to the pavilion at Jason Niles Park by the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club was granted by the Kosciusko Board of Aldermen last Tuesday.
OWBGC CEO Donald Evans and board of directors secretary Willie Kern approached the aldermen after seeking a safe place to house the club’s participants in case of emergency.
“We were brainstorming and wondering what we would do if something happened to our building,” Kern said. “We will only use it in case of an emergency if our building is not safe.”
“Safety is our top priority and we are in a glass house, so we have to have a plan if a catastrophe happens,” Evans added.
In other business the aldermen decided to move forward on a request for sale of 11acres of city-owned property off East Jefferson Street.
“I had an inquiry on if we would be interested in selling the land, but we would still have to advertise and accept bids,” Mayor Jimmy Cockroft said.
Other actions taken by the board include:
• appointing Dr. Anna Middleton to the tourism council, replacing the expired term from Pam Chadwick.
• appointed Ward 1 Alderman Taylor Casey to the airport commission.
The next scheduled meeting of the Kosciusko Board of Aldermen will be July 5.
